Schedule

June 18th  22nd, from 9:00 to 12:00h.

Description

Visual representations are fundamental for human learning and understanding. Complex, large datasets can often be better understood if provided a meaningful visualization. From graphical charts that describe trade balance evolution between countries to maps that highlight the vote distribution in an election campaign, visualization is nowadays present in our lives in various ways.

Data visualization consists on telling visual stories from data. It has basically two main parts, data analysis and data presentation. We will mainly work on the second one.

Course goals

The main goal of the course is to introduce the students to visualization. More concretely, the students will have an understanding of the process of visualization design and implementation, the perceptual aspects that must be taken into account, and the tools and methodologies used to solve visualization problems.

Course contents

  • Introduction to visualization
  • Color and perception
  • Visual data representations
  • Interaction and coordinated views
  • Data visualization problems

Evaluation

The students will have to do a small project that involves designing a visualization that provides answer to a question (or set of questions) using a tool.
